San Sebastián, the city of Spain
San Sebastián (or officially Donostia-San Sebastián) is the city and the capital of the Gipuzkoa province in the autonomous Basque Country in Spain. The population of the city is about 180,000 people and consists of both Basque and Spanish residents. The city of San Sebastian is located in the on the coast of the Biscay Bay and stands upon the Urumea River. The history of the city delves back to the ancient Roman times when a small settlement existed there. In the 11th century the first monastery was built in San Sebastian. In the 18th century in was an important port to trade with Americas. San Sebastian was captured in the 19th century by the French troops and later was rebuilt after the defeat of Napoleon.
The city of San Sebastian is known for its festivals, cuisine and sports. Here is located the football club Real Sociedad and is held well known cycling race Clásica de San Sebastián. Tourists can also taste the best examples of the Basque cuisine, which is served in many local restaurants. The cultural events are quite popular in San Sebastian. The most famous and important is San Sebastián International Film Festival, which is held in September. There is also held San Sebastián's Jazz Festival – the longest festival of such kind in Europe, Street Zinema - international audiovisual festival. Among the local festivals can also be pointed out such events as Tamborrada, Semana Grande, Basque Week, Santa Ageda Bezpera, Caldereros, Santo Tomas and Olentzero.
